3D Decoupage is the craft where a set of identical prints of the same picture are used to cut out individual components of the picture, which are then shaped and built up in to a three dimensional image, using silicone glue as a spacer. It is then normal for the picture to be varnished to give it a porcelain like finish. The craft of 3D Decoupage or Paper Tole as it is known in Canada and America, are very similar, the main difference is that with Paper Tole, more prints are used to build up more layers and each individual component is shaped to look more like the real item.
3D Decoupage is thought to originate in the 1600's by Italian furniture makers using cut out prints and engravings glued on to furniture and then covering them with lacquer. Then in the 1700's French craftsmen cut designs from paper prints and used them to decorate pieces of furniture, heavily varnishing them for protection. This is the true craft of Decoupage.
There have been many changes throughout the years, but not as many as when the craft crossed the Atlantic to America and Canada where it was developed into 3D Decoupage by elevating just three flat layers to give a 3D image. It was when it was taken up in Canada that it was developed into Paper Tole, which uses many more prints, which are cut into smaller component parts and shaped to give a very realistic 3D image.
About Us
Our staff at Welsh Pictures and Gifts, were taught the craft of Paper Tole by a Canadian teacher in 1994, we have then gone on to develop our own style and pride ourselves for the quality of picture that we now produce. We also manufacture our own picture frames, which are made to measure to fit each picture correctly, rather than use ready-made frames, which may not be the correct size for the picture.
We have sold our pictures at many large craft events throughout the UK including the Royal Welsh Show and Swansea Christmas Street Market. We also have taught 3D Decoupage for the local authority since 1996 and now also teach 3D Decoupage at private group lessons.
